I am 75 years old and had been having problems with my knee for a long time, so much so I was becoming housebound. My 90 year old neighbour recommended I should see James Lewis who had given her a hip replacement 25 years ago whilst she was still very active doing triathlons. After her operation she was able to continue for a further 10 years until she was 75! A remarkable woman who has lived a remarkable life, but that is another storey. I had the knee replacement done at Goring Hospital on the 1st May. The whole procedure from the time I entered the hospital to the time I left went wonderfully well. The nursing staff treated me with the utmost kindness - they couldn't have been better! After the operation, the next day, I was able to get dressed in a pair of shorts and sit by the bed. In the morning the physio' came and we went for a walk along the corridor and she showed me how to go up and down stairs using sticks, which was easy. A bit later Mr Lewis came to tell me he was very pleased the way the operation had gone and had a general chat about the things I should do to help the recovery. He left me feeling very confident that everything would go well, and it has. It's almost been 3 weeks since the op' and I can't believe how well I doing! I can drive (3 days now) swim, and am hoping to go bowling again soon, something I haven't done for 18 months. The pain of the first 10 days has gone and there is an achy feeling in the knee, which I'm told is usual and will go in time. I'm so pleased I had this done, and so pleased James Lewis did it. Apart from my neighbour recommending him I had heard from a couple of other people who said he was very good. Peter

I had a total right hip replacement on 17th March 2021. I cannot praise Mr Lewis and his team enough. Even though it is only 12 days since my operation I am total pain free (and have been since day one). For the first time in several years I have no knee pain (caused by a very worn hip), can walk properly without sticks, go up and down stairs without having to "heave" myself up by the bannisters and even in this short a time can do many jobs around the house that I found really tiring previously. I am building up each day to walking a little bit further but am totally confident that in a few weeks I will be able to start walking our dog again - something I have not be able to do since last October. Once again thank you Mr Lewis.

I have recently had a new knee replaced by Mr Lewis, and I could not have been more pleased. Mr Lewis explained the proceedure before the operation, and came to see me after the proceedure to explain how it went, and what to expect in recovery. It has now been 4 weeks since the proceedure, and I am able to walk without a limp for the first time in many years. Although there is some pain, Mr Lewis explained that this is to be expected, and has perscribed me pain killing medication. Mr Lewis kept in touch via a telephone consultation afer discharge, and advised me on specific excercises to rehabilitate. I feel very lucky and blessed to have received the skills of such a briliat surgeon.

I had hip replacement surgery with Mr James Lewis on 3rd Feb '21 and now, nearly three weeks later, I'm well on the road to recovery. I found it difficult to believe that a one night stay would be sufficient but in fact it worked out fine, I was ready to go home the next day and since then I've steadily got stronger and more mobile. I'm taking one or two short walks outside each day now and my new hip is working well. I think the combination of a spinal anaesthetic and careful pain relief has made a big difference as I wasn't left with any of the usual after effects of a general anaesthetic. I'd found after a previous op that morphine made me feel very unwell, but I explained this to Mr Lewis beforehand and I feel my concerns were listened to, and this has made a big difference to my recovery. The restrictions necessary in the Covid lockdown have limited my contact with Mr Lewis and Goring Hall but that has felt OK. I recommend Mr Lewis unreservedly to anyone needing a hip replacement.

I had hip replacement surgery with Mr James Lewis at Goring Hall on 3rd Feb '21. I spent one night in hospital and was discharged a fortnight ago today. Before admission I was doubtful whether I would feel OK to go home after one night, 'tho I do have the necessary support at home. In the event I did go home the day after the operation and was happy to do so. Since then each day has seen an improvement in my mobility and confidence, around the house at first then outside for the past few days. It was very cold last week and I decided not to go out. I've felt well enough to resume cooking etc for some days now. I was very well looked after throughout my brief stay, and I came home with good instructions about what to do to carry on the good work, or if I had a problem. I've not needed to take any strong painkillers after finishing the medication given me on discharge, and now I'm just taking paracetamol. Before the operation I did have concerns about being given morphine because I'd previously found it made me feel unwell, and I was very reassured to find that my concerns were listened to, and that the spinal anaesthetic and the pain relief I was given suited me well and I have had no adverse effects since coming home. It was worrying to have this operation during the Covid lockdown because I had minimal contact with the hospital beforehand, but of course now I'm pleased I went ahead and would unreservedly recommend Mr Lewis and his team.
